Palladium Maple Leaf

The Palladium Maple Leaf is a little different from your typical gold or silver investment coin. Palladium is a rare metal in the same family as platinum. It was discovered in the early 1800's by William Wollaston (a chemist, who also discovered a way to mine platinum ore), who probably had no idea that this rare and useful metal would not only adorn coins in Canada, buy also find use in the engines of cars on the road today. About 50% of palladium supplies today are used by the automotive industry in catalytic converters, which break hydrocarbons into less harmful emissions.

Palladium is rare, and Canada is fortunate enough to have deposits in the Sudbury district in Ontario. As with any scarce resource such as gold or diamonds, that equates to a premium price. The Palladium Maple Leaf was first available in 2005, then production stopped in 2007. That first run of coins was only 40,000, and as such they are starting to trade at higher premium due to scarcity and collectibility. Issues were smaller in the following years- investor interest just wasn't there. Which is interesting to note- as the Palladium Maple was the only palladium coin to be minted by a government at the time. The mint produced only 1 oz Palladium Maples (stamped with a $50 face value at the time, which of course doesn't not reflect the value of the underlying metal), there just wasn't sufficient investor interest to make fractal Maples at that point. The bust of Queen Elizabeth the second is on the obverse, and the reverse contains the ubiquitous Maple Leaf, as well as the 9995 Fine Palladium designation. The mint has started producing them again however, so if you want to acquire your own it's easier than in times past. As in the previous mintages a new Palladium Maple Leaf is 99.95% pure, and make a stunning addition to a collection.
