Proof Gold Maple Leaf
A Proof Gold Maple Leaf is special. You see the majority of bullion coins are traded simply for the underlying value of the base metal. A platinum Maple is traded to acquire platinum. When you want to buy gold, you buy a gold Maple. You will pay a premium over the cost of the gold contained in the coin, but it usually nominal. The mint deliberately puts more work into proof coins. Each step of the detailed and complicated process involves additional care to make sure the mint produces the finest possible coin.

The process starts in one Canada's gold mines- such as the Dome Mine, which has been providing gold for almost one hundred years, established in 1910. (Canada is fourth in gold production, behind South Africa (the legendary Krugerrand producer), the United States (Gold Eagles), and Australia). After refining, special blanks are highly polished before being passed on for stamping. The stamping process is usually hand fed. However they don't do a single stamp- proof coins are stamped as many as three times. The reason the RCM does this is to ensure that they absolute highest quality image and contrast is produced. The Royal Canadian Mint also has a few addition tricks up its figurative sleeve that most other mints cannot match. Some special edition coins have holograms. Others are selectively plated. Finally a Proof Gold Maple Leaf may actually have color! Of course all the care and manual handling comes with a price. Proofs trade at premiums much higher than even their uncirculated cousins. The mint also deliberately generates scarcity (and higher premiums, of course) by limiting mintage as well. The majority of proof Maple Leaf buyers are collectors. If you have the means, then a proof maple leaf makes a beautiful addition to your collection.
