Canadian Maple Leaf Coins Enjoy Well Deserved Popularity

There is no perfect coin. But many collectors will tell you that the gold Canadian Maple Leaf coins are pretty close. These coins are highly collectible for two main reasons: First, they are extremely pure. The coins are made of 99.9 percent solid gold. Secondly, their artistry is unmatched. This combination of value and attractiveness makes Canadian Maple Leaf coins a must-have for collectors.

Each year, the Royal Canadian Mint unveils a new design for their Canadian Maple Leaf coins. The 2009 version, which is now available, features a Canadian maple leaf design on one side and a side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the other. The association with the Royal Canadian Mint is important. The Canadian government guarantees these coins’ face value, gold content and purity. This helps the coins not only retain their value, but grow it, too. It’s little wonder, then, that Canadian Maple Leaf coins are in such high demand by collectors. Collectors across the world recognize these distinctive coins. This makes it easy for collectors to buy, sell or trade them at any time in nearly any corner of the world.

Canadian Mint officials no doubt recognize just how valuable their Maple Leaf coins have become. Consider that only inspectors wearing white gloves are allowed to handle the Maple Leaf coins during the minting process. Consider also, that when collectors get to the coins, they are only delivered in clear plastic holders, all to protect these valuable collectors’ items. The costs of these coins vary according to their weight. A one-ounce gem-brilliant uncirculated 2009 gold Maple Leaf coin, for instance, retails for about $1,100. A 1/10-ounce version of the same coin, only costs $139. Of course, the real value of these coins isn’t in their face value. Certain Canadian Maple Leaf coins have, over time, appreciated at rapid paces. There’s no way to say how valuable the 2009 coins may become over time.

The care with which these coins are made, along with their gold purity, have made Canadian Maple Leaf coins one of the most collectable of all coins. For new coin collectors, Maple Leafs represent a great starting point. New collectors should be aware, though, that spotting a great Maple Leaf bargain does require some homework. Collectors hoping to invest in these valuable coins should make sure to study up on their histories and values. That way, they’ll know a bargain as soon as they see one.

Does it matter of the coins have minor scratches on them. I heard that it can be normal as they coins are pure gold? Does the value go down?
Any ideas?

Hi Steven-

For the regular coins (not proofs), minor wear and tear does not affect value. They’re primarily a gold bullion investment vehicles, so a little wear is fine.
